Postpartum Essentials
You've got all your baby gear, sure, and are all set for labor… but what about making sure you’re taken care of post-birth?
Here are our favorite products for helping with recovery, as well as feeding. These also make great gifts - we love bundling a few items together with one of our favorite fourth trimester books.
Post Birth Saviors
We love Scarlet Sage’s postpartum sitz bath - they use soothing herbs to speed the healing of the perineum. Specifically they help with decreasing pain and swelling. You can use the herbs to sit in, use in a spray, or on maternity pads.
Sitz Baths are great for postpartum healing - you can add herbal remedies or even just use warm water.
These pads are great for hemorrhoids/vericosities - during pregnancy and postpartum.
One of the most essential post-birth items (it’s way better than the one they provide you in the hospital if you’re birthing there). You basically hold it upside down and squirt for continuous, gentle water pressure exactly where you need it. We liked filling with warm water and following with a perineal spray.
This spray has organic herbs traditionally used for postpartum relief and to help soothe perineal discomfort before and after childbirth. You can pack it in your birth bag and use with your peri bottle.
You’ll probably want to get a few boxes of these - maybe 3 - since there are only about 10 in a pack. These were our favorites. You can bring a few in your birth bag.
If you give birth in a hospital, we recommend hoarding as many mesh undies as possible (they provide them!) - but if you want to get more, here are some that you can order easily off of amazon.
We love this tonic by Milk Moon Herbs - it combines nutrient dense, iron-building herbs with restorative adaptogens.
Beo Bei specifically created these to help women recover from pregnancy. They offer 360° of complete core compression in a soft fabric that also wicks sweat.
Thinx underwear are great - they are absorbant and hold up to 8 teaspoons of liquid. They are also odor absorbant, quick drying and moisture wicking.
For c-section scars - can use once scar is fully closed. Helps to not to have it rubbing directly onto underwear/clothes because most likely it’s still tender. Treats the root cause of scarring by relieving tension to prevent dark, visible, raised scars.
You need extra protein during pregnancy and into postpartum. Period. Collagen can also help with skin elasticity during pregnancy and tissue repair after giving birth, and a whole host of other things. We love needed’s.
Breastfeeding Essentials
We love the 03 sets, which we sometimes wear to bed and all day postpartum. They’re great to have in the hospital or birth center too, easy access for bf.
Love these nursing bras and underwear from Australian brand Juem. Paloma bra and Lou brief are our favorites.
We love this bra for both pregnancy and breastfeeding. It’s so comfortable, chic, and supportive.
These are a must have. Warm them to help encourage milk flow, help prevent clogged ducts, promote let-down, cold to help reduce swelling and tenderness of engorgement and during weaning.
Breastfeeding pillows are really dependent on your body, so go test some out. We loved Nook, because it’s organic, and also the most attractive of the bunch, but the breast friend is what most lactation consultants recommend.
Designed to be used while you are breastfeeding, you can use this handheld pump while you are feeding on the other side, and it will collect your milk.
This pump is great because it's small, silent and fits discreetly in your bra so you can literally pump anywhere. The only problem is that it’s not covered by insurance. They do accept HSA/FSA funds, though.
Usually, your insurance will pay for (most) of your pump. We used Aeroflow for this. Basically, they coordinate with your insurance company so you don't have to! The S1 is great because you can charge it (portable) so you can bring it in the car/plane/whatever.
With ingredients including marshmallow and calendula, this cream is thickened with beeswax and shea butter and helps to soothe the discomfort of chapped, sore nipples. You can also use it for pump lubricant, for chapped lips and dry skin.
Epsom salts are amazing for so many reasons. We loved using them for breastfeeding, specifically, to help soften things - they can really help with clogged ducts. You can even fill a bowl and dangle your boob into it! You can also do a foot soak in the evening to help draw energy down for a more restful nights sleep.
Oatmama is a great new company that started with lactation bars and teas to help support a healthy milk supply (we really like this chai tea blend).
Looking for postpartum kits?
Ebi supports healthy postpartum experiences for mothers by making self-care during the postpartum period approachable and safe. They have several products they sell in kits, from body oil, to sitz bath herbs, nipple pads and underwear.
Postpartum kit developed by Earth tu Face for Storq. It includes: soothing spray, sitz bath, nursing balm.– 100% natural ingredients. Pair this with their nursing bra for a great gift.
We love Bodily. For their comprehensive kits, yes, but also they stand out because they provide a ton of information that is research-led, evidence based and real life.
